Challenge
Deliver a fully functional wafer load station in ten weeks after prior design failure
The CMP equipment manufacturer needed a wafer load station to interface with their polishing process. The first design partner failed to deliver, leaving the schedule nearly exhausted and no usable design. The load station required reliable wafer transfer to the polishing head, precise alignment during rotation, and high-pressure cleaning of wafers and heads after polishing—all under a compressed ten-week timeline to meet scheduled demonstrations.
Innovation
Compliant, high-precision wafer handling in a compact module
We delivered a working CMP wafer load station with several key innovations:
- Compliant lower chuck allowed precise alignment with the transfer head while accommodating inevitable production misalignments.
- 360° rotation of the transfer head enabled thorough cleaning and flexible wafer handling.
- AC brushless servo motors provided precise, reliable motion control.
- Ultra-pure cleaning fluids were delivered directly to the wafer and head during processing.
- All process-contact materials were 316L stainless steel and PET to ensure chemical compatibility and cleanliness.
Result
On-time delivery with industry-leading reliability
The CMP wafer load station was completed in time for the demonstration. Life testing confirmed it as “the most reliable mechanism in the system,” providing robust wafer transfer, effective cleaning, and precise alignment—solving the technical and schedule challenges left by the prior design.
