Automated fiber optic line accelerates high-value transducer production

Project snapshot
Client:
Leading fiber optic manufacturer
Location:
N/A
Sector:
Product type:
Automated fiber optic processing line
Challenge

Develop automated fiber optic assembly where little automation exists

The manufacturer aimed to produce five types of high-value fiber optic transducers but faced a nascent industry with almost no existing automation. Component loading, stripping, and bonding stations had to be developed from scratch under a tight schedule to capture a rapidly growing market.

Innovation

End-to-end automated loading, stripping, and bonding modules

We delivered flexible, production-ready automation to complement the client’s proprietary polishing process.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Complete design and manufacture of component loading and stripping modules.
  • Development of fiber handling, cleaning, and bonding stations with precise, repeatable motion.
  • Integration of system automation and software controls for synchronized operations.
  • Industrial design of the machine to support funding acquisition and potential OEM production.
  • Flexible architecture enabling multiple fiber types and future process expansion.
Result

Rapid market entry with fully automated fiber optic assembly

The automated line allowed the client to focus on their proprietary polishing process while Owens delivered the critical support modules, enabling faster commercialization and protecting market share in a rapidly expanding industry.

Case studies

The customer needed to deliver their confocal IR laser scanning technology on a fully automated 300 mm platform. Developing in-house automation would have diverted engineering resources and delayed commercialization….

Next-generation process and device technologies demanded new measurement tools, but fabs require fully automated 300 mm configurations for evaluation. Our client needed a high-vacuum wafer automation platform…

The OEM needed to transition a lab-demonstrated wafer probe process to a production-ready, fully 300 mm-compliant automation platform. The system required micron-level wafer positioning, exceptional positional…
