Challenge
Adapt semiconductor-based technology for high-volume HDD production
Our client had developed a semiconductor wafer process that needed to be adapted for hard disk media. The HDD manufacturing environment demanded much higher throughput, different form factors, and unique handling. Additionally, each HDD factory had customized automation systems. Meeting these requirements simultaneously, on an aggressive schedule, required deep understanding of HDD production and careful design of an interface module.
Innovation
Custom load module integrating semiconductor process with HDD factory automation
We partnered with the client to identify critical process elements and translate them into an HDD-compatible automation solution:
- Developed a disk handling module to interface the client’s tool with the HDD factory systems.
- Integrated a six-axis robot with custom end effectors for high-precision media handling.
- Implemented cassette handling and clean air management to maintain process quality.
- Provided full robot programming and system control to deliver a turnkey module.
Result
Rapid market entry with high reliability and throughput
The load module enabled the client to successfully introduce their technology into the HDD market. High-speed, precise handling, and seamless factory integration allowed the new process to scale rapidly, meeting production requirements and supporting aggressive adoption in multiple HDD manufacturing lines.
