High-precision thin film PV cell flattening, testing, and sorting

Sector:
Product type:
Automated thin film PV test and sort line
Challenge

Automate flattening, testing, and binning of delicate thin film PV cells

The client needed to scale up the back end of their thin film PV cell processing line with full automation. The process required flattening the curved cells from the original roll, electrically testing each cell, and sorting cells into coin stack-style cassettes based on flatness and electrical performance. Handling the fragile cells without edge or corner damage was critical. In addition, over 18 different physical and electrical measurements had to be tracked for each cell to support QA and final binning.

Innovation

Modular automation integrating flattening, testing, and sorting

We collaborated with the manufacturer’s process team to define the optimal architecture and integrate all three process steps. The solution included:

  • Automated cell flattening system to remove curvature without damaging edges.
  • Integration of a standard I-V electrical tester for precise measurement.
  • Sorting and binning module that placed cells into coin stack-style cassettes based on measured data.
  • Modular line design enabling seamless interface with factory material handling and data tracking systems.
  • System architecture capable of supporting high-throughput production while maintaining product integrity.
Result

Seamless production ramp with high yield and data-tracked cells

The automated system successfully flattened, tested, and sorted the thin film PV cells with minimal damage, while maintaining traceability for all measurements. The modular design allowed easy integration into the client’s existing material handling and factory systems, enabling a reliable production ramp and improved throughput.
