Micro-transfer printing tools bring photonics displays to industrial scale

Project snapshot
Client:
X Display Company (XDC)
Location:
USA
Sector:
Product type:
Micro-transfer printing (µTP) tools
Micro-transfer printing tool stage and print head
Challenge

Scale niche µTP technology without expanding internal staff or facilities

X Display Company (XDC) develops cutting-edge Micro-Transfer Printing (µTP) tools for R&D and industrial-scale manufacturing of photonics, LIDAR, lighting, and microLED display components.

The company faced several hurdles:

  • µTP is highly specialized, transferring micron-scale materials (as small as 2×2 µm) at rates up to 3 million pieces per minute. Very few manufacturers have experience building these tools.
  • XDC’s lean team and limited facility space made in-house integration impossible without hiring additional engineers and assemblers, costing an estimated $450,000+ per year in payroll alone.
  • Supplier engagement was challenging, as small companies often struggle to work with large, front-end automation vendors, creating procurement bottlenecks.
Innovation

Full-service design, manufacturing, and integration partnership

AIR partnered with XDC to provide end-to-end design, build, and supply chain management for their µTP tools, ensuring functional, production-ready systems while relieving internal staff of manufacturing and procurement responsibilities.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Collaborating from the earliest design phase to refine concepts, resolve process challenges, and optimize tool functionality.
  • Integrating complex internal components, including point-to-point wiring, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and mechanical assemblies, into robust production-ready tools.
  • Leveraging extensive supplier networks to source components efficiently, reducing procurement time and risk.
  • Establishing flexible in-house and outsourced manufacturing processes to assemble multiple tool generations, including MTP-200, MTP-300, and MTP-Panel G4.5.
  • Relieving XDC from staffing overheads, allowing the lean team to focus on core R&D and operations.
  • Providing rapid issue resolution and hands-on support to ensure smooth tool integration and high-quality output.
Result

Scaled µTP production while boosting efficiency and reducing overhead

AIR’s partnership enabled XDC to bring highly specialized µTP tools from concept to production without hiring additional staff or expanding facilities. The collaboration improved procurement, reduced risk with suppliers, and ensured high-quality tool assembly.

The XDC team is now able to focus on core R&D and display innovation, while we manage the full lifecycle of tool integration, resulting in faster time-to-market and production-ready systems capable of meeting industrial-scale demand.

AIR brings a lot of different skills and capabilities to the table. They add value to the final package, and I don’t have to carry the heads for in-house production — that allows our team to focus on core work. They are a true partner.
Justin Brown, Executive VP of Operations, XDC
Case studies

Attolight, a European startup, needed to rapidly scale their electron-beam lab tool into a semiconductor fab-ready system to meet customer requirements. The project presented multiple challenges:

Semiconductor startup Silicon Valley X-Ray (SVXR) had proven its X-ray inspection technology on a laboratory tool and needed to rapidly deliver a production-worthy system for installation in a customer…

The customer needed to deliver their confocal IR laser scanning technology on a fully automated 300 mm platform. Developing in-house automation would have diverted engineering resources and delayed commercialization….
