How teabag machine automation is transforming global tea production

Modern automated teabag machines are transforming global tea production by giving manufacturers the chance to address market challenges and changes. Using more accurate controls, improved sealing technology and integrated packaging systems, automation can increase productivity while helping tea brands seamlessly bring new products to market.

It’s essential for tea manufacturers to accurately portion the product and maintain consistent filling across a busy production line. The teabag needs to be sealed correctly and prepared for transport. All of this needs to happen at speed, without producing too much waste.

Tea brands also need to adapt to the changing demands and expectations from the market. This includes using sustainable materials, premium products and offering greater choice. Production lines originally built to manufacture a limited range of traditional teabags may no longer provide the flexibility required. This guide will explain how ourbeverage packaging solutionsare changing the game.

Why Tea Production Needs More Flexibility

Tea production has changed significantly over recent years. The traditional, everyday blends remain in place, but it’s now a lot more complex. This is because a lot of tea manufacturers now produce a wider range of speciality teas and herbal infusions. Tea brands opt for both premium individually wrapped products and catering packs containing hundreds of teabags.

Each of those products may have different requirements. A product line may need to handle:

  • Different teabag materials
  • Different portion sizes
  • Different outer wrapping
  • Different case configurations

A production line needs to handle these different aspects without lengthy changeovers or manual intervention. Lengthy changeovers may prevent the manufacturer from meeting speed demands. Manual labour may increase production costs and lead to human error. Both of those aspects lead to an increase in the amount of product waste.

Teabag machineautomation provides the controls needed to manage a broader product range consistently. The systems can store settings for different products and packaging systems, allowing operators to select the appropriate configuration through a human-machine interface.

This flexibility means manufacturers can handle high-mix production environments without increasing downtime or the need for manual labour.

AIR has experience designing completebeverage packaging solutionsas well as upgrading existing machines. Our systems can incorporate product handling, inspection, carton loading, case packing and track-and-trace technology as part of an integrated production line. Enquire about ourteabag machinenow.

Increasing Production Without Sacrificing Quality

High production speed is only valuable when the rest of the production line can keep up. Quality must not dip. Our automation systems make sure that the quality of the output remains extremely high. In fact, without manual intervention, quality is enhanced.

AIR designed a twin-lane carton packing systemfor a tea producer that included a custom product buffer and bypass-and-refeed function. The resulting system could handle four carton styles at speeds of up to 120 packs per minute. It also allowed upstream equipment to remain in operation during downstream stoppages.

Servo-controlled systems provide more precise management of movement, speed and positioning. They can help manufacturers maintain consistent product handling while making future adjustments easier to implement through software rather than extensive mechanical modification.

Sustainable Teabags at Scale

Generally, consumers around the world are becoming more conscious about sustainability. Net-zero targets and other sustainability commitments are changing how manufacturers make teabags.

One of the biggest changes in the tea industry is the type of material the teabag is made out of. Brands may want to introduce compostable teabags. Materials may behave differently when folded, cut, sealed or handled by automated equipment.

For example, AIR designed abeverage packaging solutionfor a new compostable formula for teabags. The PLA (polylactic acid) paper made it difficult to seal the bag. AIR invented a new sealing drum assembly using new heater technology that enabled finer control of sealing temperatures, meaning the PLA paper could be processed. This technology proved so successful that the customer decided to patent the design.

Helping to Achieve Sustainability Targets

Automatedteabag machinescan help manufacturers and brands achieve sustainability targets. There are several ways they can do that:

  • Enabling the introduction of recyclable or compostable materials
  • Reducing waste caused by inaccurate sealing or handling
  • Identifying faults before they affect a larger production batch
  • Extending the working life of existing machinery
  • Improving production efficiency and reducing avoidable downtime

The most effective solution will depend on the material, product format and existing manufacturing process. Sustainable packaging changes should therefore be tested under realistic operating conditions before full-scale production begins. This proves our automation solutions are helping transform global tea production.

Enabling Product Innovation

Another way in which automatedteabag machinesare transforming global tea production is by supporting product innovation. Modern systems can be adapted to handle speciality teas, individually wrapped teabags, compostable materials and different carton sizes or formats.

This gives tea producers more freedom to respond to changing consumer preferences without having to tweak manual processes. Traditional methods are not very adaptable, so introducing automation opens the door for new or limited-edition products.

Choosing the RightBeverage Packaging Solution

Automation is helping tea manufacturers respond to a market that demands greater choice, improved sustainability and consistently high standards.

A modernteabag machinecan provide tighter control over sealing and product handling. Flexible systems also give manufacturers more scope to introduce premium formats and alternative packaging materials.

Whether the requirement is to improve an existing system or develop a new production line, the objective remains the same. The aim is to create reliableautomationthat enables the business to perform better.Speak to the team at AIRto discuss how automatedteabag machinescould improve your process today.
