From Classroom to Career: Why This School Leaver Chose an Apprenticeship

In an era where university seems like the default path after secondary school, some young people are choosing different routes. We sat down with Lewis, a new electrical instrumentation apprentice at KAON Automation in Sligo, to discuss his choice to pursue an apprenticeship straight after completing his Leaving Certificate.
Q: Let’s start with what drew you to KAON Automation?
A: I actually had a week’s work experience with KAON recently, and it really opened my eyes to what modern automation looks like. The variety of work and the environment really appealed to me. I’ve always been interested in hands-on work – I spent five years working with a builder during holidays, which taught me the value of practical skills.
Q: What made you choose an apprenticeship over university?
A: I wanted to start building my career right away. The apprenticeship offers both classroom learning and on-the-job training, and you’re earning while learning. Plus, I’ll be working with experienced engineers and technicians who are experts in their field. The fact that KAON works with multinational companies across Ireland, Europe, Asia, and South America was also appealing – it shows there’s room for growth.
Q: Were you always interested in the electrical/instrumentation field?
A: My interest grew over time. I took Construction Studies for my Leaving Cert and did well in Woodwork during Junior Cycle. I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving and working with my hands. My experience in construction and maintenance work, whether with TG Home Improvements or at Markree Courtyard, helped me realize I wanted to pursue something technical.
Q: What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
A: I’d say look at all your options. University isn’t the only path to a successful career. With an apprenticeship, you’re getting real-world experience from day one, and you’re developing practical skills that are always in demand.
Q: Let’s shift gears a bit – what do you do when you’re not working?
A: I’m quite active! I played football with Ballisodare United and Arrow Harps. I enjoy mountain biking and fishing. I also help out on my family’s farm in Collooney, which has taught me a lot about responsibility and working independently. One of my more unique hobbies is aquarium setup – it requires attention to detail and patience, skills that actually translate well to technical work.
Q: Having just completed your Leaving Cert, what advice would you give to students making career decisions?
A: I’d say don’t feel pressured to follow what everyone else is doing. Look at your strengths and what you enjoy. I knew I learned best by doing, and I had good results in technical subjects. The apprenticeship route aligned perfectly with that. Also, don’t underestimate the value of work experience – my various jobs and work placements, including the week at KAON, really helped clarify my career path.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in your apprenticeship?
A: I’m excited about the variety of work. At KAON, apprentices get to work across different areas – from panel building to field wiring and machine debugging. The four-year program includes several phases of technical training, so I’ll be constantly learning and developing new skills. Plus, I already have my driving license and Safe Pass certification, so I’m ready to hit the ground running.
Q: Finally, where do you see yourself in five years?
A: By then, I’ll be fully qualified with four years of practical experience under my belt. KAON works with cutting-edge automation technology, so I’ll have expertise in areas like robotics, vision systems, and servo systems. Given the company’s international presence, who knows? I might even get to work on projects abroad. The possibilities are exciting!
