Challenge
Automating high-speed lidding with built-in flexibility
One of the world’s largest confectionery manufacturers wanted to automate the process of lidding tubs of individually wrapped chocolates. The system needed to pick and place multiple lid types made from different materials and apply them accurately to matching tubs.
In addition to improving production rates, the solution had to be designed with future product format changes in mind, allowing the customer to adapt the system with minimal additional equipment and disruption.
Innovation
Future-proofed, high-speed auto-lidding design
AIR designed a high-speed automated lidding solution for both plastic and tin containers, delivering improved productivity while building in long-term flexibility.
- High-speed pick-and-place lidding system for multiple lid and tub materials
- Future-proofed machine architecture to support evolving product formats
- Custom puck system to handle difficult-to-de-nest lids and prevent line jamming
- Integrated reject chute to remove unpicked lids via conveyor into a tote bin
- Fully integrated machine design with fabricated guarding frame
- Access guard doors incorporated to ensure full safety compliance
Result
Faster changeovers and significantly increased throughput
The automated confectionery packaging machine operates at 50 pieces per minute and delivers fast, tool-free changeovers, significantly improving production efficiency. A second-generation version of the system has since been developed, providing increased flexibility and achieving throughput of up to 100 placements per minute.
