Challenge
Design a flexible, manufacturable platform for highly customized workflows
A leader in microfluidic dispensing needed design and manufacturing support for a next-generation synthetic biology workflow platform. The system had to support modularity, flexibility, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost, while integrating up to 100 devices from 30 different suppliers based on customer configuration. The manufacturer required a partner experienced in modular system design, ongoing design changes, and turnkey manufacturing.
Innovation
Modular platform design with turnkey manufacturing support
We partnered with the customer to design and manufacture a flexible, modular automation platform capable of supporting a wide range of configurations.
Our approach included:
- Developing a modular system architecture to support multiple configurations and a large suite of integrated devices.
- Designing an environmentally controlled primary cabin with single or dual robot handling options.
- Enabling module alignment within microns of accuracy to simplify robot teaching and reconfiguration.
- Working closely with internal teams to rapidly evaluate cost and custom configuration options.
- Managing all materials and delivering turnkey manufacturing, with all factory acceptance testing completed in-house.
Result
Customizable automation delivered with reduced cost and complexity
The modular platform enabled highly customized synthetic biology workflows while simplifying manufacturing, configuration, and cost evaluation.
